Text
Some video games are inspired by text for instance there is a huge amount of games which have been inspired by comics, fictional books and non-fictional books etc. An example of this is the dark Knight rises which is a game for IOS and android, Lego games such as Lego batman 3, Harry potter, Assassins creed, Justice League and so much more. For instance the first assassin’s creed was inspired by the 1983 Novel Alamut by Vladimir Bartol and some of the lines in the book can be heard within the game word by word. Or the famous Harry potter series written by J.K Rowling and have been turned into several video games including Lego: Harry potter and Harry Potter - Quiddicth World.
Although text have inspired video games a lot in their story telling and setting. Text is also used within the game to tell the story in a text block. A Text block is where a text is presented in a block so the character can read the text within the block. This is mainly done to help with communicating for instance the text block is a popular game in old arcade games such as Mario. As you can see in the example image to the right, there is a text box which is communicating to the player. Although sometimes the text boxes cannot be that successful and not involve the player simply because the player may not be interested in the text box and click past the text block, Ignoring it and ruining the story. Due to this using a text box to communicate to the player stopped around the 2000s because games became more advanced so having to stop and read a block became annoying and unnecessary.
Theater
Some video games have been inspired by theatre although the most noticeable video game which has used theatre as a reference is puppeteer. Puppeteer is a platform game which has a platform which looks/act as a theatre. For instance in the video below you can see that the video game is set in an 'magical' puppeteers theatre although the game is played on the same stage the environment is always changing.
Film
Films have inspired video games an massive amount for instance a few video games which have been inspired by games are; Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers & Return Of The King which created an game where you got to play Legolas and Aragon and the second game was just basically an update. Harry potter is also a huge inspiration, creating games where you can travel and interact in Hogwarts.
Using a film as inspiration already gives an game a detailed story line and give the developers a visual image on what the game expectations should be for instance In harry potter the developers have the option to watch the film and see what Hogwarts interior is like although Say if the video game is based from text I.E a book then it is up to the imagination off the developer to think what the interior looks like - there isn't an exact image.
Television
Television is also a media form which helps inspire and adapt video games story lines; in fact television is more successful for having more of an adaption for video games than films. For instance, my most recent favourite video game based off a television series is the walking dead: Michonne. This video game allows the player to make interactions throughout the game which changes the story line depending on the player’s actions and decisions. Although the television series did inspire the video game, the walking dead originally comes from a comic book series. This game succeeded because of how well the story line comes together for example the writing off the story line and the performances within the game is amazing and whatever decision you make within the game will make a flawless story line- Bad or good.
